If you haven't had your eyes checked for a while, you may be surprised at the changes in eye examinations. A lot of the things you hated have gone like a puff of smoke... just like that puff of air most opticians use to check for pressure in the eye. Instead, at A Stodel we use new pressure measuring equipment for glaucoma testing (iCare).

And remember those heavy frames you had to wear...the ones with the slots for all those lenses that were put in and out to test your sight? No more. A Nikon computerised refractor head contains all the lenses for testing sight. It sits in front of your eyes and the lenses are dialed up by remote control. Pretty whizzy, right?!

Then there's Humphrey...our hospital standard and DVLA approved visual field testing machine. When you read letters on the eye chart, this is just measuring how well you see straight ahead. Visual field testing measures how well the eyes and visual system work over a large area. If you like, it measures what you see out of the corner of your eye. It's useful in glaucoma detection and some neurological problems.

Finally, many of you have told us how uncomfortable you are with the optician coming so 'up close and personal' to look at your eyes. Well, we use an arms length internal eye examining device (HBIO) that gives a 3D view, combining the same level of professional care with the appropriate respect for your personal space.
